Sacramento Mayor Makes Sure He Finds Time To Stay Fit

Don't ask Sacramento, Calif., Mayor Kevin Johnson to dunk, because he won't, and can't. He was about six years removed from the National Basketball Association, where he had starred as a point guard for the Phoenix Suns, and his slam over Hakeem Olajuwon in the 1994 playoffs still has a life of its own. That play still makes sports fans' lists of most memorable dunks. So he tried again to defy gravity - and age. ‘I couldn't,’ he said. Fitness, though, remains part of Johnson's lifestyle. As a former professional athlete, he knows the importance of staying in shape and the perils of inactivity. So, no more basketball - but how does the mayor keep fit? Here's how: About three times a week he hits the gym. He usually works out at 5:30 a.m., but sometimes he'll go at 11 p.m. Getting up that early is no problem. Johnson is one of those people who don't need much sleep.
