The Buddy System, Forging Friendships At The Gym

“The gym is a wonderful place to make new friends. In fact, it may be the best place. Friendships have time to grow when you meet regularly and your goals are similar. If you go around the same time each day, or take the same weekly or biweekly class, you see some of the same ladies, and conversations become easier and easier. If your gym offers a hiking class, I urge you to go. Conversations are so easy out on the trail! My closest friends and I met about 20 years ago when we were young, busy moms, rushing to get some exercise in after we dropped off the kids. But our circle certainly wasn’t limited to only moms. We also met a few DINKS, along the way. Then, without even that much thought, we began to grow closer and closer, sharing more and more, until it dawned on us that we’d all become the best of friends. Remember to start slowly and don’t go overboard sharing too much too soon. When you’re just beginning a new friendship, talk about your fitness goals, your hobbies, and your job. If your goal is to make new friends, it’s a good idea to keep your conversation light, upbeat, and friendly. The people you meet will feel like their day has been improved simply by being around you. There’s a wonderful fluidity that goes on with us and the fantastic women we continue to meet. And don’t forget about the staff—the instructors also make fantastic friends!”
