Treadmill Canines A Trend Catching On At Placer County Gym

“It may be another step up the evolutionary ladder for dogs. Or just a high-tech way for canines to burn off some energy in a club-like atmosphere. But Phyllis Mathews had to laugh — and marvel at the sight — when she spotted 2-year-old miniature schnauzer Shea padding along nonchalantly on the treadmill at Auburn’s Total Fitness health club. ‘She was just doing her thing and I just broke up,’ Mathews said. Shea has been keeping fit on the gym’s treadmill and is sometimes joined by Raider, a 4-year-old redbone hound and Howie, a 3-year-old hound-boxer-lab. While Shea keeps a rather leisurely pace of about 2.2 mph, Raider can chug along at 10-minute miles — doggone good for even human runners. Shea started hitting the gym about two months ago. It wasn’t that it was inconvenient. She’s Total Fitness owner Linda Dixon’s dog and she keeps the pooch with her during the day. With winter weather...
